Jazz at Drew is an all-day outdoor festival featuring some of the most prolific names in jazz. It began in 1991 with an audience of 150 people and grew to accommodate some 15,000 jazz fans annually. This annual event is hosted by Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science, a Minority Serving Institution dedicated to meeting the needs of the underserved positively impacting their lives through quality medical education and community engagement initiatives such as this one. The event is designed to raise funds to support Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science students and the Saturday Science Academy II – CDU’s premier education pipeline program for children and youth K-12.
Headquartered in Los Angeles – a former hotbed for all things related to jazz music – Jazz at Drew’s emphasis on showcasing home-grown talent with international appeal has been the distinguishing factor that separates the event from larger jazz festivals in Southern California. More than any other event, it displays LA jazz in a range of styles all while being surrounded by colorful marketplace.
Former acts to have graced the Jazz at Drew stage include Earth, Wind & Fire, Nancy Wilson, Dionne Warwick, Bobby Womack, Brothers Johnson, The Chi-Lites, The Impressions, Poncho Sanchez, George Duke, Oscar Brown, Jr., Hiroshima, The Rickey Minor Band and Friends, Cuba Gooding & The Main Ingredient, Sheila E., Kenny Burrell, Jill Scott, Chrisette Michelle, Joe Higgs and others. Former festival sponsors include Dignity Health, Cedars-Sinai, Honda, Northrop Grumman, American Airlines, Arrowhead Waters, Embassy Suites, LA Renaissance Hotels, Starbucks, Southern California Edison, Wachovia Bank, 102.3 KJLH, 94.7 The Wave, 88.1 KJazz, Our Weekly, La Opinion, LA Sentinel, LA Watts Times, WLCAC, UFCW, and many more.
